What is the difference between hardware and software?

    The Software:

We will briefly describe in the following lines the hardware / software relationship.
The reality is a bit more complex than the explanation offered below, however, the general idea is the same.
Software (= programs) is essential for the operation of a computer. They constitute the "intelligence" of the machine. (do not think that a computer with programs can become intelligent! ...)
Programs are instructions that write to files that the computer can execute.
    There are 2 main types:
    • Operating systems (OS)
    • Applications
           ⇢OS (operating system):
The OS “dialogues” directly with your hardware (generally, the processor). They are therefore designed specifically according to the processors on which they will operate.
Thus, Microsoft Windows OS 9x, NT, ... are mainly designed for PC type processors (intel Pentium, PentiumII, PentiumIII, AMD, Cyrix, ..) while MacOS is designed for processors
Motorolla, Unix for SunSparc, DECalpha, ...) You will not be able to install Microsoft Windows on Sun stations or on Apple, ... because the processor does not match ...

          ⇢Applications:
Applications are designed to speak to the OS. Each time you place an order in an application, it is transmitted to the OS which transmits it to the hardware, which in turn returns the result in the reverse path.
So an application like AutoCAD for example will not work under MacOS (apple) or UNIX, because it was designed specifically for Microsoft Windows.
There are, however, some more or less effective ways to work around these problems (running an application on an OS for which it is not made), but that is another story ...

     Hardware:

All the material, mechanical, magnetic, electrical and electronic equipment that goes into making up a computer, or information processing machines in general, (Metro 1975). Synon. usual equipment, material. The Hardware of a system includes the relationships sought in the field. Information processing methods are much more effective when the operation of the material chosen closely matches that of the relationships in question.
